The Woman in Black

The Woman in Black will bring gothic literature to Y9 and help prepare them for their GCSE course.

Author Kipps is a junior solicitor who is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the sole inhabitant of Eel Marsh House.

This house stands towards the end of a causeway that is wreathed in multitudes of fog and mystery… But it is not until he takes a glimpse of an atrophied young woman, dressed in black from the top to the bottom of her body, that a creeping sense of unease begins to beat and take hold… This is a feeling that is deepened by the reluctance of the locals, who are constantly talking about The Woman In Black, and her terrible purpose.

Written in the traditional Gothic style, Susan Hill has created a deepening plot which enhances the aspects of mystery and fear.
